A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtual machine with an allocated portion of resources from a physical server. The VPS behaves similarly to physically hosted machine being completely dedicated to a single customers use, high level of privacy and can be configured as needed.
Cloud Hosting is a term specific to utilizing Cloud Computing to deliver hosting services and is a set of hardware and software configured to share the resources as a pool. A portion of control (resource pool) is provided to the user to scale resources as needed. We provide this scalability (upgrading or downgrading), by request at any time.
In the event of a complete server failure or a catastrophic event, it's possible you won't even notice. You may experience a few minute delay (at most) while the VPS is starting up on another physical server. In most cases however we know if a server is having issues, and can live migrate any VPS to a new physical server without any disruption.
Storage Area Network (SAN) is a dedicated network for disk storage. This can include multiple storage devices that make up a cluster and are connected to servers by way of a virtual disk adapter. This is completely transparent to the user, the storage (disk space) looks and in many cases performs at a much higher level than a traditional single or multiple physical hard drives. You may hear this term when discussing VPS, because the SAN makes up the default storage (disk space) provided on Virtual Private Servers.
The CPU Core on a VPS is a virtual processor that correspond to a physical processor "Core" on the server hardware. Choosing a VPS with 2-Cores, means the Operating System (Windows or Linux) will recognize two processors. We enforce careful planning of CPU Cores/Ghz assigned to each VPS so we can maintain the highest flexibility & availability.
The GHz (speed or frequency) determines how fast the CPUs can process information. Increasing the GHz, may also increase the CPU Core count (as of this writing 2.5GHz is the max GHz supported on a single CPU Core), once the physical limit in GHz has been reached additional cores are required to share the processing. Example: 5Ghz (5Ghz / 2.5GHz = 2) requires 2 CPU Cores, 8Ghz (8Ghz / 2.5GHz = 3.2) requires 4 CPU Cores because you must round up to the next whole number (CPU Core Count).
We have designed the network to not have any single points of failure. Starting with redundant power feeds (commonly referred to as a 'A' and 'B' power), redundant switches (also with Remote Power Supplies as a backup) and everything else all the way to the physical servers and Storage Attached Network (SAN) devices, we have made sure to take every measure to achieve 100% network up-time.
With our Private Cloud, we have added an additional backup SAN group that can take over if something happens to the primary SAN group. This allows us to have a hot standby of your server available in the event something happens on the primary group.
Hostek.com provides OS Patching for all VPS servers. These patches are automatically applied during night time hours unless you have made previous arrangements with our VPS Management Team.
Patching applications such as MS SQL, MySQL, ColdFusion or other Hostek.com installed software is handled on a per request basis.
We routinely monitor your VPS or Virtual Dedicated server for high utilization of CPU, RAM, or disk I/O and will contact you with any concerns or suggestions.
As part of our Premium VPS Services add-on, we also provide answers or suggestions on how to properly manage or maintain you server. This includes analyzing your server usage/performance and making suggestions. This also includes proactive monitoring and upgrade/patching management.
Two hours of Premium Management Services is included with the Premium service add-on. Each support case is a 15 minute minimum. Additional time beyond two hours can be purchased at our current hourly rate.
NOTE: This is NOT a supplement for programming or development.
A VPN is a Virtual Private Network that allows a VPN connected user to send/receive data to/from a server as if directly connected; providing a more secure method of connecting to a server.
For ordering a VPN please include comments during checkout. If you need more than 25 VPN users or any other special requirements please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
1-25 VPN Users = $25/month
Yes, we can help you with Load Balancing and configuring your VLAN. You can have your own network infrastructure within our Private Cloud. Please schedule an appointment with the Schedule link on this page to have one of our VPS Solution Specialists contact you.
We utilize Dell's Compellent Storage; a true Enterprise grade storage solution. This unique system delivers the fastest performance for your most important files and every component is redundant.
We not only have multiple Primary SAN's described above, but we have invested heavily into Secondary SAN's, with live replication from the each Primary SAN - which ensures recovery in the event of a problem with the Primary SAN. With a few quick changes we can bring your server online on the backup SAN. This is a great benefit for you.
In most cases, more Cores is not better when the total Ghz (CPU speed) stays the same. Keep in mind *Software Licensing.
Often we get asked about other vendors who offer default plans with 8 core or 16 core, etc. Behind the scenes they are giving you what could have been accomplished with 1 Core, however 8 or 16 'sounds' better.
If you have an application that would run better on multiple cores, we can easily adjust that for you, as that would not affect your overall Ghz. Additional Ghz is available at any time.
* Some software is licensed per Core, like MS SQL Server. So for example if you wanted the Web edition of MS SQL Server installed, and you selected the Business level Windows VPS, you would most likely want the Core reduced to 2 instead of 4. This would not detract from your server performance in most cases, it would just save you money on licensing.
In most cases, you will never need to scale out your bandwidth. However, if that needs arises, we can quickly and seemlessly scale your bandwidth to accomodate your needs.
Burstable bandwidth allows your VPS to handle abnormal bandwidth requests.
Unlimited Bandwidth for your VPS means that we do not limit the amount of Bandwidth or Traffic to/from your server based on your mbps connection. Some hosts will oversell this and mention a 1000 mbps connection. Yes, that is what our connections are too, but for your protection our VPS's are set at 10 or 20 mbps by default depending on the plan level. A Starter VPS would have 10 mbps whereas a Silver/Business/Enterprise level would have 20 mbps. It is extremely rare for a site to need more mbps. If you do need more, we can scale that up for you as needed.
With our Cloud Infrastructure, your RAM can be scaled from 1 GB to 256 GB. Scaling the Ram for your server does require a reboot of the server.
Additional Ram, if needed, can be purchased for just $15/month per GB.
Additional CPU can be added to your server if you have an application or applications that need additional power. For most cases, the packages we have put together are based on what serves most customers the best. We realize there are cases where you may need addition CPU.
Additional CPU can be added for $23/month per 1.0 Ghz added.
Note that if you have MS SQL Web, Standard or Enterprise Edition installed, the license is per 2 CPU cores, so you may be required to add an additional SQL license if the CPU cores are increased. If you are unsure, feel free to ask our sales team and we can help you.
